  1. Khedive (governor) of Egypt 1866-79. A
  2. grandson of Mehemet Ali, he became viceroy of
  3. Egypt in 1863 and in 1866 received the title
  4. of khedive from the Ottoman sultan. He
  5. amassed huge foreign debts and in 1875
  6. Britain, at Prime Minister Disraeli's
  7. suggestion, bought the khedive's Suez Canal
  8. shares for nearly million, establishing
  9. Anglo-French control of Egypt's finances. In
  10. 1879 the UK and France persuaded the sultan
  11. to appoint Tewfik, his son, khedive in his
  12. place.
